Just 40 minutes from Marrakech, the Agafay Desert offers a unique and peaceful landscape. It is not like the Sahara with big sand dunes. Instead, it has layers of rocky hills that give the same feeling of silence, emptiness, and escape.
Small traditional villages made of mud appear from time to time, blending into the land. You may see a lone camel grazing, and often nothing else. Agafay is one of the few places in Morocco where you can experience such quiet and natural beauty so close to the city.
Many travelers visit Agafay during a 4×4 day trip from Marrakech or as part of a 2-day private tour. In two days, you can explore many different places just south of Marrakech: the desert, the High Atlas Mountains, the Kik Plateau, waterfalls, and the Lalla Takerkoust Lake.
You can start in the Ourika Valley, hike in the mountains, have lunch with a Berber family, visit waterfalls, and see how argan oil is made. You might visit the 12th-century Tinmel Mosque, enjoy tea by the lake, or trek through the Atlas Mountains.
After a full day of green landscapes and mountain views, you will end your journey in the peaceful Agafay Desert. Arrive in the afternoon, settle into your camp, and enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars. Spend the night in a stone bungalow or a luxury tent, and explore the desert the next morning by foot, camel, horse, or mountain bike.
Day 1: Marrakech → Tahanouet → Kik Plateau → Lalla Takerkoust Lake → Agafay Desert
Your 4×4 driver will pick you up from your hotel at 9:00 AM for your trip to the Agafay Desert, located just 30 minutes from Marrakech.
You will travel off-road past small lakes and Berber villages, with time to stop for short walks. You may also choose a camel ride and enjoy tea in a local Berber home.
The road then continues to Lalla Takerkoust Lake, a popular place for picnics and traditional restaurants by the water. Lunch will be in one of the lakeside restaurants (not included).
In the afternoon, you will drive to the Agafay Desert and spend the night in your camp’s tent or lodge.
Day 2: Agafay Desert → Kik Plateau → Moulay Brahim → Asni → Marrakech
Wake up early to watch the sunrise, then enjoy a Moroccan breakfast.
After breakfast, you will drive toward the Kik Plateau and stop at a viewpoint for refreshments and photos.
Next, continue to Moulay Brahim, a village known for its holy shrine. The road then descends into Asni, a small market town at the foot of the Atlas Mountains.
Note: On Saturdays, there is a lively weekly souk in Asni, where you can see local life, fresh produce, and animal trading.
Passing through orchards of apple, cherry, and apricot trees, the road then leads you back to the plains of Marrakech. You will arrive in the city around 6:00 PM, after enjoying a beautiful mix of desert, mountains, lakes, and Berber villages.
Included in The price
Not included:
1. What’s the difference between a private and a shared tour?
The main difference is the vehicle. In a shared tour, you only share the transportation. Your room and tent stay private, and you can also eat separately if you prefer.
Another difference is that private tours are always guaranteed — once you book, the tour is confirmed.
Shared tours depend on demand and need at least 4 people. If the minimum is not reached, you can choose a free cancellation or continue as a private tour with a special price.
2. Is vegetarian or vegan food available?
Yes, we can prepare vegetarian or vegan meals. Just tell us during the booking, and remind your driver during the tour.
3. Can I reach the camp without riding a camel?
Yes, you can. The camp has a 4×4 car that transports luggage and guests who don’t want to ride camels, or who prefer to ride only once.
If you booked a private tour, your 4×4 vehicle can take you directly to the camp if needed.
4. Does the camp have private bathrooms?
Yes. Our camp is a luxury camp, and all tents have private bathrooms and showers. We include this in our basic packages without a big extra cost.
5. Can I bring my luggage on the tour?
Yes, you can bring your luggage. Our vehicles have plenty of space for large suitcases. Your luggage stays with you at all times, and in the desert, a 4×4 car will take it safely to your tent at the camp.
How to Pay for the Tour:
To confirm your tour or activity, we require a small deposit paid through PayPal to our group coordinator. The remaining balance is paid in cash at pick-up, directly to your driver, in euros or the equivalent amount in dirhams.
Credit Cards:
We do not accept credit card payments. Credit cards are not very practical in Morocco, and they come with high fees and some security risks.
Paying the Total Amount with PayPal:
We usually request the balance in cash because PayPal has high transaction fees and delays for international transfers. In some cases, we can accept full payment by PayPal, but a 5% fee will be added to cover extra charges. If you prefer this option, please arrange it with us before the tour date.
